Employers can create healthy, positive organisations by the creation of Employee assistance programmes (EAP) and Health Promotion Programmes (HPP) : i. EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) The main purpose for these programs is to identify, treat, cure or manage existing problems (e.g. psychological or mental illness) that may impact the employees work performance – known as tertiary prevention. Their key function is to improve the affected employee’s chance of recovery/ recuperation and to keep them employed whilst doing this. EAPs are provided by employers/ organisations as a service and benefit to their employees, where some interventions include a service to the employee’s immediate families. These programmes provide employees with the required counselling, services and facilities to overcome/ treat their problems. EAPs provide employees with a multitudes on interventions covering problems within their personal and work lives. They are usually provided in-house (by the organization) or by external vendors (provided by the employer). They include various wellbeing (physical, emotional; psychosocial) treatment programmes as well as programmes related to the policies and procedures within the organisation. ii. HPP (Health Promotion Programme) These are primary interventions that focus on the promotion of employee health. These initiatives are focused on prevention and include educational and screening tests (e. Discovery Health Screening Tests at work). The objective is to promote good health in order to reduce health related issues that may impact on an employee’s performance and therefore organisational productivity.
