Metamorphosis describes an unusual story which has allegoric elements. Gregor Samsa wakes
up as an insect and tries to continue his life. First couple of the pages emphasize his duties such
as waking up early, going to work and being responsible for his family. Even though he
transformed into an insect, he still thinks about daily obligations and social rules. I believe that
his thoughts about daily life represent the monotone and machine-like lifestyle. As an insect, he
is not panicked but he is very numb. I think this feeling of numbness can be considered as boring
routine of the working life.

transforms into an insect that people usually feel disgusted and irritated. This form of animal is
unwanted and people want to kill and destroy it. I think Kafka’s choice of animal describes the
