THEORY OF CONSUMPTION IN ISLAM

1 Understanding Islam Consumption

Consumption is a form of human economic behavior in human life. Every living thing must
carry out consumption activities, including humans. The definition of consumption in economics is
not the same as the term consumption in everyday life which is defined by eating and drinking
behavior. In economics, consumption is every person's behavior to use and utilize goods and services
to meet their needs.

Consumption is one of the three main economics besides production and distribution.
Consumption is generally interpreted as an action to reduce or spend the economic use of an object,
such as eating food, wearing clothes, riding a motorcycle, occupying a house, and so on. In
consuming a person or household tends to maximize its usability or utility. In consuming there is no
limit to achieve it. As Mundell emphasized, every individual or group has a desire to maximize its
desires. The desire in question is pleasure (happiness). The basis of the fulfillment of happiness is
desire.

Consumption itself is an inseparable part of life. With consumption, a person can avoid the
difficulties and problems that hinder him. Therefore, the consumption survival

could be continued

2 Urgency Consumption in Islam

In life, people will not be able to fulfill the obligation ruhiyah (spiritual) and Maliyah
(material) without the fulfillment of primary needs such as food, shelter, and security. These needs
are elements of human life. However, the percentage of needs possessed by humans is very diverse.
Sometimes extreme measures appear in accessing needs. There are some people who are very
excessive in meeting their needs so that an excessive attitude arises (israf). On the other hand, we
get a miserly nature in fulfilling it, both for himself and his family.

, Consumption has enormous urgency in every economy, because there is no life for humans
without consumption. Therefore, economic activity leads to the fulfillment of consumption demands
for humans. Neglecting consumption means neglecting life and also neglecting man's enforcement
of his duties in life. Once the importance of regulating consumption, the caliph Umar bin Khattab
during his caliphate gave important attention to consumption, including:

1. Umar ra was very enthusiastic in meeting a decent level of consumption for each of
his people. Examples for that are many. Among other things, when Umar ra went to
the land of Sham, and he knew the condition of some poor people whose basic
needs were not sufficient, then he ordered to determine the level of sufficient food,
which was given to each of them every month. Among other evidences that also
show Umar ra's concern about the commission is that his efforts in economic
development were focused on fighting poverty and meeting the basic needs of the
ummah.

2. Umar ra argued that a Muslim is responsible for meeting a decent level of
consumption for his family and denying those who ignore it. One example is when
he saw a girl who fell up and fell because her family fainted?” when he was told that
the girl was Abdullah bin Umar's daughter, he said to Abdullah, "walk in the earth to
provide for your family, and seek for your daughter what people are looking for for
their daughter."

3. Umar ra did not allow reluctance to consume things things that are permissible to
the degree that they endanger themselves, even with the purpose of worship.
Among the narrations about his firm stance in this regard, that Abu Umar As
Syaibani said, "We were on the side of Umar bin Al Khat}t}ab, when food was
brought to him, someone from the people distanced himself, then Umar said, "Why
did he ? They replied, "He was fasting, so Umar said, "What fast? They
replied, "Fasting throughout the year, then Umar knocked on the person's head with
a stick he was carrying and said, "Eat O Dahr! Eat, O Dahr! (History of Abdurrazaq in
his Musnad). Umar behaved like that because fasting like that is not sunnah and
brings harm to himself, because it hinders his right to consume.

Provisions in Islamic economics, which are based on spiritual values, deny the characteristics
of excessive and materialistic consumer behavior. Consumer behavior in the system of capitalism
and socialism tends to be dominated by the values of materialism. The needs that must be met are
only materialist needs and never touch spiritual values. As a result, human needs for goods and
services are only oriented towards materialistic values.

Meeting the needs of goods and services must be materially beneficial. In doing
consumption, the utility value received must be proportional to what has been spent so that there is
a balance between what is given and what is obtained. However, the understanding of the concept
of utility described by economists is very diverse. Utility is an abstract concept about the use value
and benefits of goods and services consumed. A concept of a person's taste and reference in terms
