DEFINE SOCIALIZATION AND ITS THEORIES?
Socialization is a process which enables people to become skillful, responsible and proficient
member of society. It depicts the ways through which an individual become familiar with the
terms and condition of acknowledgement with the societal standards and desires and get to know
about societal beliefs.
Socialization is a sociological process that occurs through socializing.
When an individual is born he has its own specific genetic makeup and biological traits, and with
the passage of time he experiences self-development by means of social interaction, he learns the
basic physical tasks like sitting, standing, and walking i.e. get to know about the material culture
of society and similarly he also learn about the non-material culture of society i.e. beliefs, values
and norms. He also gets to know about the blessings of family and love. Hence a person living in
amazon forest will be different form a person living a normal human life because he have-not
experience socialization with other normal beings in his entire life. We evolve through the
actions we see , listen and feel thus the walking , eating and surviving actions of a guy in
amazon will be similar to animals as he have been with them his whole life.
THEORIES OF SOCIALIZATION:
Symbolic interactionism
Symbolic interactionism is a sociological theory which enables an individual to create his own
hypothesis and make his own images regarding the standards of society. Through this an
individual is able to interpret individual behaviors and make sense of their own social worlds. In
short it focuses on the relationship an individual makes with its society.
It highly depends on the society where individual lives and with the people he interact. People
belonging from different nations, customs have different beliefs because the circle of interactions
are different.
Symbolic interactionism is a lifelong process it evolves throughout the life of an individual as at
different stages of life he interacts with different social circles and experience different cultures.
Role theory:
Role theory is a concept of sociology and social psychology in which attitude, norms, self-
attitude and behavior of different roles in an individual life (i.e. father, teacher, etc.) are
considered.
