APC1502_ ASSIGNMENT 2 2020. The Politics Of Contemporary Africa. The negritude movement was founded by Léopold senghor, Aime Cease and Leon-Gontras Damas. It was an ideological movement led by French speaking Africans who confidently believed in distinctive African identity that was defined by the colonial myth and strategies about Africa. Negritude is an important aspect to the rejection of colonialism. It has made an impact on how the colonised vied themselves, it also sparked and fed off subsequent literary movement that were responding to global politics. The aim of the negritude movement was to raise and cultivate black consciousness across Africa and it diaspora Negritude was born from a shared experience of discrimination and oppression and an attempt to dispel stereotypes and create a new black consciousness SINGLE-PARTY RULE One party rule is a type of state in which one political part has the right to form the government usually based on the existing constitution, and forming of other political parties is forbidden, in the case of opposition parties against the dominant ruling party is allowed but have no real chance of gaining power. They control the government, have a stable base of mass popular support and create internal mechanism for controlling, funding, information and nomination. The one party system did not benefit the African masses (only the leaders who plundered the state resources). The rise of military rule in African countries rose to prominence after the independence and dominated the continents politics for more than three decades. The most popular method to take over power was by a coup (a sudden and illegal overthrow of an existing government by a portion of the states armed forces). Military intervention has been on integral features of the politics of Africa after independence and became popular method of effecting change. Military coups occurred without much difficulty in Africa, country was asleep. The most common reason for a military to take over is mismanagement of the country and corruption by the public whose standard of living deteriorate because of civilian leaders mismanaged the economy. ETHNICITY Focuses on the origin and descents rather than a geographical consideration. Ethnic groups are a community of people who have the conviction that they have a common identity and a common fate based on issues of origin Ethnic groups are important to the political scientists and Africanist in terms on how the y relate to one another within the state. Ethnic groups may be divided into subgroups identities and loyalties. Subgroups on kinship are referred to as clans. A process driven by international trade and investment and is aided by information technology. Globalisation is not just an economic phenomenon but a political, cultural, military and environmental one as well. Globalisation has increased the flow of goods, services and capital border boosting economic activities and enhancing prosperity. It has brought benefits in developed countries as well as negative effects. It is about the interconnection of people and business across the world that eventually leads to global culture, political and economic integration. It is the ability to move and communicate easily with others all over the world in order to conduct business internationally. Globalisation has radically increased incomes and economic growth in developing countries and lowered prices in developed countries. It also changed the power balance between developing and developed countries. DIRECT DEMOCRACY Is a form of democracy in which people decide on the policy initiatives allows the elaboration of citizens to express the opinion on decisions taken by the federal parliament and to propose amendments? High levels pf instability are common in direct democracies, even though a majority directs decision structures. It makes government more responsive to the people’s wishes, and more political participation. It is also time consuming and difficult from citizens to be fully informed about every issue and can make people vulnerable to demagogues. There are two types’ subcomponents of the representative: The parliamentary system The presidential system Factors representing characteristics of indirect democracy include: its advantages, disadvantages Structure such as higher corruption rates, negligence in voting, possibility of bad voting for representatives, freedom, majority rule and people’s rights. Representative democracy is necessary because the framing of laws and rules which are to be followed by an entire country is a tedious process, it demands the knowledge of well- educated as well as experienced faculties. The term representative democracy came in to being in the 1790s.
