THL1502 – ASSIGNMENT 4 2021. Aristotle in his Poetics (c. 330 BC) divides the temporal structure of a play into a conception (commencement), the middle (development) and the final part of a play (the conclusion). The beginning of a play is a key influencer, to a great extent, on a structure of a play. A dramatist interprets the “moment” in a play using two choices; early point of attack and late point of attack. A play that falls under the first point (an early point), portrays the events at the beginning of a play. (The Dictionary Salesmen) In the opening scene an interaction between a child, selling a dictionary and an illiterate man. The short performance is played out in chronological order. The later attack makes reference to how the events portrayed in the play only starts to make sense near the end of the play. As previously stated, The Dictionary Salesmen is played out in from of the audience in chronological order and therefore cannot be an example if the “late point of attack”. After coming to a decision on when the appropriate time would be for fictional events of the drama or play to comment, the dramatist additionally has made a decision on the arrangement and cadence with which to portray the rest of upcoming events. As drama is a performance that is performed in the external present tense, temporal shifts in drama are more difficult compared to narrative texts. Drama therefore, does not necessarily flow around in time as easily as a novel. In a drama, it is important to make use of time shifts and should thus be clearly indicated. The two main ways these shifts are indicated visually or through dialogue. Lighting techniques and sound effects are also an indication of temporal changes. A play’s tempo influences the structure of a play as the tempo is sped up by shorter scenes in the hopes of creating tension to the audience. Just as there are different time related levels in a play there are also two different spatial levels. These two levels are called; performance space and fictional space. Performances usually takes place in theaters (although are This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :35:25 GMT -06:00 This study resource was shared via CourseH not only limited to only theatres). The fictional space is the positioning of characters and events in a particular play. As there are certain places associated with certain places in the events of play, the place where the play occurs can therefore influence the structure of a play. The entrance and exit of characters influence the structure of the drama and can determine the impact the course of events in the play. The arrival of the young boy stirs the plot of the play and sets it in motion. The same affect can be achieved when a character exits. Drama is a visual and not a verbal representation of the fictional world and is there attached to the physical features of time. Performance time makes reference to the duration (which is usually between one and three hours) of the play. Reading time refers to the duration it takes to read a play. Considering that different people have different reading speed. The reading time is usually measured in the number of pages of a play.
