QUESTION 1
1. THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF USING NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION WHEN DEALING WITH
COLLEAGUES AND CLIENTS IN YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT.
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Nonverbal communication involves an array of behaviours, some of which may not even be
contemplated as behaviours by all. Alongside the more obvious nonverbal behaviours such as
facial, vocal and postural expressions, touch, proxemics and gaze, one can also identify
physical attractiveness, unique facial, as well as such behavioural choices as hair style,
clothing, and titivation or more generally appearance. Some researchers have even included
material objects, which serve forthcoming functions within a society under this heading 1 (e.g.,
a parlor organ, Ames, 1980).
Nonverbal communication is mostly biologically based. Some nonverbal communication has
the same meaning across. Nonverbal communication developed earlier than verbal
communication and served an early and important survival function that helped humans later
develop verbal communication. While some of our nonverbal communication abilities, like our
sense of smell, lost strength as our verbal capacities increased, other abilities like
paralanguage and movement have grown alongside verbal complexity. Nonverbal
communication is processed by the older part of our brain which makes it more instinctual
and involuntary than verbal communication.
Even if no word is used in non-verbal communication, it can efficiently convey many human
feelings more precisely than verbal methods of communication.
1.2 DEFINITION
Non-verbal communication is commonly defined as the aspect of communication that is not
expressed in words. Under the assumptions that ‘one cannot not communicate’ (Watzlawick
et al., 1967, p. 51) and that all movements are to some degree expressive (Wiener et al.,
1972). It is the way we in which we communicate our ideas, opinions and feelings with each
