IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON THE WORLD
A. Thesis Statement:
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and presents an
unprecedented challenge to public health, food system, and daily life. The economic and
social disruption caused by the pandemic is devastating millions of people at stake of falling
into extreme poverty.

I. Crippling economic recession:
1. Global Economic Growth:
i. World Bank confirmed deepest recession since World War Two,
pandemic shrunk the global economy by 5.2% in FY2020 which during
2008 global financial crisis, fell by 9.5%
ii. Organization for economic cooperation and development stated that
global growth would be cut in half to 1.5%.
iii. $83 Billion has already been removed from emerging markets since
outbreak of covid-19.
2. Rise of unemployment and increased poverty:
i. 515 million full time jobs were lost by the half of FY2020: International
Labor Organization
ii. 60 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty in 2020-21: World

global trade falling by an enormous 15% : United Nations.
