MGG2602 Assignment 2 2021 LATEST MARKED ASSIGNMENT A+. Name and give examples of two self-harming behaviours that a child may engage in as a sign that they may be abused.  Substance abuse Evidence suggests there is a close connection between substance abuse and abuse in childhood. Alcohol and drugs create their own set of problems financially, socially and interpersonally. As quoted by Walker (2004:42) “not only do drugs and alcohol serve to numb and block the pain temporarily and induce a feeling of goodwill or oblivion; they can effectively block out the attempts for others to help. Substance abuse stops the survivor from experiencing and coming to terms with their pain or prevents the pain from getting too close, this is the survivor’s assertion of both annoyance towards the abuser and demonstrates the absence of control and boundaries experienced by the survivor during their abuse.  Mixing with the wrong crowd Survivors often feel they are different from other people and that they are isolated and disempowered, these feelings can result into tasks that involve others who do not fit into the ordinary world and an attraction to be apart of this group in order to feel equal due to members sense of difference and deficiency. The survivor and the group express anger to the environment around them for not giving them the chance they deserve. This can new lifestyle for the survivor can put them in greater danger. 2.3. Discuss the difference between natural sexual exploration between siblings and sibling incest. Natural sexual exploration Sibling incest Sexual exploration is part of development in children. This occurs because they are interested in their own bodies and the bodies of other children and adults. Sibling incest is when the victim and the sexual perpetrator are related by birth, remarriage/stepfamilies, or foster placement. Sexual experimentation is a part of the growing child’s pursuit of identity and occurs in different times of development. It generally happens with children who are the same age or close in There is approximately a five-year age difference between the perpetrator and the victim. The compulsion involved in attracting the younger child is developmentally and 6 age. socially unacceptable behaviour. Sexual exploration occurs when both individuals want to participate in sexual play making it a mutual understanding and not forcing one another to participate. It involves the older child exploiting the younger child. This compulsion makes it abusive and is a misuse of power, authority and trust from the older sibling. Sexual exploration among others are short-lived and occurs when children are still learning about their bodies. Sibling incest can occur for a long period of time as the sibling live together. The victim might be threatened to not tell anyone by the use of bribery or force and may feel trapped and pressured by the perpetrator. 2.4. There are certain things that a helper should do when dealing with a sexually abused child. Name four of these aspects. Creating a safe environment for children to express their feelings. It is vital not to force the victim to say anything until they are ready to speak. The victim must gain trust in the helper and sense that the helper is willing to hear the story without them feeling obliged to say anything. Examine that the victim is safe and try to ensure that they are safe from further harm. Reassure the victim that they have done nothing wrong and that the offenders are responsible. It is important for the victim to know that nobody is angry towards them bur rather concerned that they have been hurt. Reassure the victim that they are not the only ones to whom this has happened to. It is important that the victim knows that other children have been touched by adults inappropriately and have gained help from their situation. 2.5. Name and give examples of two characteristics of incestuous families. Communication between members is poor- little information is given about sexual matters. Parents do not discuss sexual matters with their children which could lead to disrespect for other people’s bodies and their right to privacy. This could be because some parents are too embarrassed to discuss sexual matters with their children since nobody had ever discussed these matters with them. Patriarchal and authoritarian- patriarchal perspectives award males with more power than it does females this too invests fathers with tremendous power over their children, therefore, fathers 7 exhibit attitudes of ownership towards their wives and daughters and inflexible definitions of gender role characterisation and duties. 2.6. Discuss your understanding of the function of an intermediary in criminal court. An intermediary is generally a social worker whose position is to hold the child’s hand throughout the whole court process and to protect a child from feeling intimidated by the court process and reduce the trauma experienced. The intermediary’s role is to ask the child questions simply whilst not changing the meaning of the question and encourage the child to express their emotions and feelings. 2.7. Mention four ways in which you think a child’s experience when, testifying in a criminal court, can be improved. Explain the court process in a simple language that the child will easily understand. Use role-play so the child can understand the sequence of events that are taking place in the courtroom and the correct times to speak and testify, use this time to also address any misconceptions the child may have so that they feel comfortable in court and reduce their anxiety. Spend an adequate amount of time with the child and allow and encourage the child to speak about any of their fears that they may have, whether it is in the courtroom or about their abuser. Be honest with the child and let them know that the accused can be present in court and work on that fear to build up confidence on the date of the trial. Reassure the child that they will be kept safe in the future and give them helpful hints on giving evidence and how to prepare for the experience they will endure. Explain that the child does not need to please anyone in the courtroom and that their role is to explain the incident that had happened honestly. Give a tour of the court before the trial, so the child can establish where they will be positioned during the process of the trial. Answer any questions that are asked in a simple, nurturing manner to relieve the child from any stress that they might have. 8 2.8. Identify and motivate two emotions a child might experience if he or she has to testify in criminal court against their sexual abuse perpetrator. Embarrassment/ashamed: the child might feel embarrassed about having to explain the situation in such detail, the child might even feel ashamed of themselves concerning what had happened and blame themselves. Fear: a child might feel fear as they have to see their perpetrator again and explain in front of everyone the sequence of events that occurred, this can lead the child to think that the perpetrator will come after them again and hurt them. If a misconception has not been covered by the intermediary or trusted adult, the child might, for example, face their fear of a policeman that is present in the courtroom. Question Three: 3.1. Try to identify what her feelings must have been when she discovered what had happened and when she reported the matter. I think Mike’s mother endured on a variety of feelings such as anger towards her husband for the abuse he showed in front of his children which lead Mike to imitate his behaviour, heartbreak and depression for what her daughter had to go through and anger towards her son for having sexual intercourse with his sister and fear with concern to what could happen to her son and guilt and blame towards herself for not putting an end to her marriage and allowing this to continue for some time. 3.2. Identify four possible issues that could have been involved in Mike’s becoming a sibling sexual offender. Peer pressure in terms of his classmates were more sexually successful than he was and being dared to have sexual intercourse with a girl. Lack of socialisation, Mike’s father was strict and did not allow his children to socialise much after school causing Mike to be fearful to approach a female to talk to. Mike’s father’s actions towards his mother such as forcing her to have sex with him in front of the children on several occasions and often beating, for Mike to witness this could have lead to him 9 thinking that it is acceptable to treat women in that manner and therefore imitated his father’s actions. Growing up in an unhappy family environment where the Mike was not allowed to talk to his parents regarding life made it impossible for Mike to speak about what is morally right and wrong when it comes to sex and the immense pressure he had due to his friends daring him to have sexual intercourse with a girl. 3.3. Whose needs did Mike’s mother protect by reporting the matter to the authorities; motivate your answer. Mike’s mother protected her own needs as well as both of her children’s needs. By reporting the matter to the authorities, Mike, his sister and mother can receive the necessary counselling that they require. Mike’s sister is protected from repeated sexual abuse from her brother and Mike’s mother can leave her husband and provide a safer environment for her children. 3.4 Identify four possible advantages for Mike and his family of reporting the matter to the authorities. With Mike’s mother opening up about the trauma she has experienced from her husband and the percussions that have occurred due to keeping quiet, Mike’s mother can now find the relative help she needs and make the best decision for herself and her children in terms of safety. By reporting the matter to the authorities Mike now learns that his actions were immoral and can get the necessary counselling to improve his social skills and learn about sex in a healthy manner and can seek questions that he could never ask his parents. Mike’s sister can also get the necessary counselling to help her cope with what she had to go through with her brother and what she witnessed growing up from her father. Mike’s sister can also take this opportunity to improve her social skills and talk about any questions that she could not ask her parent. Mike’s mother reporting this to the authorities also means that she will be protected from repeated sexual abuse. Mike’s father can no longer physically and sexually abuse his wife, his children never have to witness the trauma anymore and Mike’s father can get the correct treatment and rehabilitation to better himself, if not imprisoned due to his actions.
