Anatomy of Strategic Leaders
Leaders emerged in various ways and applied different leadership style to
execute their goals. An anatomy of strategic leader encompasses determining the
leader characteristics and analyzing its impact on strategic decisions process. Cognitive
ability and Conceptual capacity of strategic leaders empower them to overcome the
VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) environment and deliver the
appropriate solutions for problems. According to PwC report in 2015, only 8% of 6000
senior executives were the strategic leaders (Singh, 2019), Hence not all leaders can be
considered as strategic leaders.
Strategic leaders are creative, reflective, proactive thinkers, and analytical in the
discharge of their duties. In this vein, the first and basic concern followed by them is
identifying the diversity and ethical considerations (e.g. values, codes, morals, belief,
age, nationality and etc.). This is the fundamentals of relevance between people and
organization success. Strategic leaders strive to deliver the basic needs, encourage and
influence their followers to collaborate and be involved in decision-making. Strategic
leaders promote the level of organizational learning and emphasize on constant
evaluation regarding to be competitive.
Indeed, strategic leaders are the reflection of organization. Leaders assess their
motives, visions and actions continuously and portray the big achievable picture. They
learn from their mistakes, leverage collective wisdom and make bold and courageous
decisions. Albeit, they are truly humble and give more credit to their followers (people)
and have faith in their capabilities. Persistence communication and communication
between senior leaders and employees lead to build stronger trust bonds. This helps
strategic leaders to be more assure in thinking out of the box and seek opportunities out
of their comfort zone.
Overall, anatomy of strategic leaders should be considered and evaluated constantly.
This can be directly and indirectly affecting the level of effectiveness in achieving the
organizational objectives.
