guide and influence others to do specific activities lead to achieve particular objectives. In this
vein, Dess and his colleagues (2019, p.334), described leadership as a process of ‘transforming
organizations from what they are to what the leader would have them become.’ Worth to note
that leadership, also considered as a social influence process to establish the behaviors and
relationship within an organization (Abeh Ukaidi, 2016, p.26). Organizational performance
affected by the innovation culture; consequently, organizational culture is impacted by
leadership style. In this essence, effective leadership style is compulsory for organization to
minimize the attrition rate. Meraku (2017, p.337), articulated that leadership is not a trend or
charisma. Meraku described that good leaders define goals and priorities considering the
standards regardless of their prestige or image to gain trust of others.
The importance of leadership style for an organization is to find the balance between the
demands and needs of employees, owners, customers and community. Leaders play a vital role
in orientating and directing the organization vision and mission. Team leaders have certain
quality which inherently possess or achieved via training. Dess et. al. (2019, p.341) mentioned
another factor for an effective leader, emotional intelligence (EI). Emotional intelligence
encompasses five components of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and
social skills.
Amanchukwu et. al. (2015, p.6-10), propound different leadership theories to demystify various
point of view about leaders.
Great Man Theory considered that leaders are born and not made. This theory was
used by the time male quality was needed for leadership.
Trait Theory was not so different from Great Man theory. This theory assumes people
have certain qualities which makes them to be better candidate for leadership
Contingency Theory emphasize on variables related to the environment, in this sense,
no single leadership style will be appropriate in all situations. This theory described
effective leadership based on how much the leader’s qualities and leadership style are
aligned to the demanded situations.
Situational Theory considered that different leadership styled might be more
appropriate for different decision-making. In other words, leaders choose the best action
based on circumstance.
Participative Theory refer to a supreme leadership style in which leader encourage
group member to involve in decision-making process regarding to improve the
commitment and collaboration and pave the path to the high-quality decision and
business success. The main disadvantage in this style is time-consuming for
communications and come up with decision.
