Module 2- Fundamentals of Technical Writing
(Week 2-3)
Overview
Come and have an insightful and a meaningful learning
and writing. Let us celebrate life with all the opportunities amid
this pandemic and enter the gateway to appreciating
Technical Writing.
Technical writing is basically writing with some technical
considerations. You write for a specific purpose and you do it
formal most of the time. There are confinements and essentials
which you have to know in order for you to be effective first and
foremost in conveying your message and largely in doing and
accomplishing work that is expected of you, hence making you
a better technical writer. The saying, “you cannot give what
you don’t have” is in place here. You have to know some
technical jargons and their appurtenances; otherwise you
cannot capture the underpinnings of the work and you will
struggle hard to express something or translate something into
clear communication. In this light, you have to equip yourself.
You have to learn the basics and continuously harness them as
you go through your day to day work. Being a student is still
the best time to do this. Once you are already in the field, much
is expected of you and going back to the basics will hardly suit
in your occupied time. Learn seriously now and maximize the
learning very soon as you translate them into meaningful, clear
and effective correspondences, reports and papers.
This module contains the fundamentals of technical
writing specifically its definition and crafting its content. The
lesson in this module will guide you in producing more effective
1
, I. Objectives
At the end of this module, you are expected to:

2. Acquire the important features of technical writing through effective
illustrations; and
II. Learning Activities
A. Let Us Check
Before you explore the discussion part, try to identify the factors that made
the following illustrations weak.
(1)The completion of the research took time because the data analysis
took 12 months!
(2)A decision on this matter must be made in a prompt manner before the
deadline comes and goes.
(3)There was nothing more that could be done: the main power had
failed, there were no torches in the building, the back-up generator
was broken....
(4)Cutting of the specimens to size was undertaken using a diamond saw.
B. Let Us Learn
At some point in your life as students, you struggle on what to write.
Conversely, you already have a topic yet you don’t know how to write it. The
first one is not a problem at all because most of the times topics are given to
you by your professors. So, the main challenge is, how will you write a topic
at hand?
This part will now overlay the basics of technical writing as your guide
in achieving an effective written output.
First, let us define what technical writing is.
Technical writing
A kind of writing done in the workplace.
It may be a half-page memo or a 500-page grant research
proposal.
