One of the most important quantity to calculate in pipe flow is the head loss.
If the head loss is known, the pressure change can be calculated and this will
allow, for example, to select the right pump.
Remember that the head loss that results from the wall shear in a flow is
related to the friction factor f by the Darcy–Weisbach equation, namely:
It follows that, if the friction factor is known, we can evaluate the head loss
and in turn the pressure drop. Remember that the relation between the
pressure drop and the head loss for a horizontal pipe writes as:
