Social impact assessment is the process of identifying and managing the social impacts caused by industrial development projects. It can also be applied to plans, policies and programmes concerning a particular community. SIA is an important tool in indigenous 2 communities to assess the economic, social and cultural impacts due to industrial activities. Social Impact Assessment identifies the intended and unintended impacts that a proposed project or development is likely to have on a community or individuals and suggest mitigation measures to prevent these impacts and identify opportunities to enhance the positive impacts and benefits for local communities and broader society. Purpose of SIA and how SIA came into existence as an appraisal technique Developed during the 1970s along with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Social impact assessment aimed to investigate the impact of planning activities on the social and cultural facets of human existence. According to Branch et al (1984:25), the purpose of SIA techniques is “to estimate the effects of a proposed action on the social organization of a community and on the well-being of people over both the short- and the long-term,’’
