Mandatory Influenza Vaccinations in the Healthcare Setting 2 Mandatory Influenza Vaccinations in the Healthcare Setting For professionals working in the healthcare industry, there is a duty to provide safe, efficient, quality of care to protect, and promote the wellbeing, and the welfare of the general public, and promoting optimum health. Undeniably, Healthcare workers are exposed to many blood-borne pathogens, infections, and communicable diseases; such as, the influenza virus strain. Health Care clinicians must protect patients from harm and injury. The influenza virus is known to be associated with severe complications, mortality and morbidity. The aim of this paper is to discuss the mandated policies of health care clinicians receiving the annual influenza vaccination and their autonomous rights to refuse the influenza vaccination based on reasonable accommodation on religion, disability, and sole justice of liberty. EMPLOYMENT LAW Employment law is it policy in which it applies to all employees to be upheld with the corporate concession labor unions and employers. To comply with the employment law, policies should exercise reasonable accommodation, and preserve the management rights and best interest in connection with securing patient health and shelter. (Gruben,Siemieniuk, & Mcgreer,2014). In the United States, Professional societies; such as; the Infectious Disease Society of America, The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, and the American College of Physicians and American Academy of Pediatrics are calling for all Health Care clinicians to be mandated to receive the influenza vaccination. (Ottenberg, Wu, Poland, Jacobson, Koenig, & Tilburt, 2011). It is an object of civil defense to safeguard society from the burden of the horrific consequences of being exposed to the influenza strain
