In the past, researchers might have studied fiction novels, movies, or even comic books to try to understand how culture shapes society. Video games have now taken a central role in the socialization experience. Past research on television and movies reveal that the depiction of certain groups has an impact on how people of that group view themselves and how others, outside of the group, view the group: "A medium's general depiction of a group does have an impact on its users' perceptions of that group" (Williams, et al., 2009, p. 820). As video games begin to displace "traditional" media as one of the dominant means by which we learn about cultures, it is important to understand what the representations in video games are telling us. The representations in games may have identity and self-esteem effects on people, as they may be happy to see "themselves" presented in a game but may find the continuous repetition of negative stereotypes leading to feelings of unimportance and powerlessness (Williams, et al., 2009, p. 820).
