Introduction: Our skin forms the first line of defense. It has several characteristics that make skin an ideal environment for the growth of most microbes. Some of the characteristics of skin are high percentage of salt, low pH, sebum and an outer layer of dead skin cells that act as a barrier to pathogens. The only organisms that can tolerate high levels of salt are able to grow on skin. Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to learn how to isolate and identify bacteria from skin and learn the characteristics. Also, to learn which selective mediums select for salt tolerant bacteria and reveals mannitol fermentation.
