Stereotypes:
-Beliefs about attributes that are thought to be characteristic of members of particular
groups (lecture)→ cognitive component
-Simplified representation of social groups (Myers p.531)→ simplify the world→
helps to process information quicker, focus on important things
-Exaggerate differences
-Generalization about a group of people
-Can be positive, negative (Myers p.532)
-Can be accurate (desirable) (Myers p.532)→ ‘sensitivity to diversity’, ‘cultural
awareness in a multicultural world’
-Can be inaccurate (Myers p.532)
-Can be unconscious (Myers p.541)→ bases people’s behavior
-Resistant to new information (Myers p.543)
Prejudice:
-A negative attitude, response or evaluation toward or about a certain group and its
individual members (lecture p.31)→ affective component of stereotypes
-Can be positive or negative attitudes (Greenwald, Pettigrew p. 670)-Preconceived
negative judgment of a group and its members→ benefits the self or own group
-Product which we learn from our environment
