Types of reflex in baby
1. Rooting reflex: This reflex starts when the corner of baby’s mouth is stocked or
touched. The baby will turn his or her head and opens his or her mouth the follow
and root in the direction of stroking. This helps the baby to find breast or bottle to
start feeding. The reflex lasts about 4 months.
2. Suckling reflex: when the roof of baby’s mouth is touched the baby will start to
suck. This reflex does not start until about 23rd week of the pregnancy and is not
fully developed until about 36th week. Because of this reflex baby some time suck
his/her own fingers.
3. Moro reflex: The Moro reflex is often called startle reflex. This occurs when baby
is startled with a loud sound or movement. In response to sound the baby throw
back his/her head, extends out his/her hand and legs, cries, then pull the arms
and legs back in. The baby’s own cry can also startle the baby and trigger this
reflex. This reflex lasts until the baby is about 2 months old.
4. Tonic nick reflex: when baby’s head is turned to one side the arm on that side
starched out and the opposite arm bends up at the elbow. This is often called
fencing position. This reflex lasts until the baby is about 5-7 months old.
5. Grasping reflex: Stoking the palms of the baby’s hand cause to close the baby’s
finger in a grasp. This reflex lasts until the baby is about 5-6 months old. A similar
reflex in toes lasts until the baby is about 9-12 months old.
6. Stepping reflex: This reflex is also called walking and dance reflex because a
baby appears to take step or dance when held upright when baby’s legs touching
a solid surface. This reflex lasts until the baby is about 2 months old.
