Introduction
Brazil, has been under the Portuguese rule for over three centuries, Brazil gain its
independence in 1822, with the abolition of slavery in 1888, this discontinued the monarchical
system of government that resulted in the subsequent proclamation of a republic in the military
in 1989. During this time Brazil, coffee exporters, had great political influence and dominated
the country until the populist leader Getulio VARGAS came to power in 1930, (Catholic Church
in Brazil | Religious Literacy Project).
Individual indigenous tribes and settlements were numbered around 2,000, when the
Portuguese first discovered Brazil as it soon came to be known. The early inhabitants of Brazil
were semi nomadic people, who moved around to find suitable food and water. To survive they
hunted, fished and grew their own goods, ("Brazil History). When the Europeans arrived in the
16th century, they found the inhabitants of the county to practice cannibalism, who fought
constantly over the popular Brazilwood tree which was highly valuable for its red dye. In seeing
this behavior, it prompted the Europeans to “civilize” the natives. Thus, the Europeans almost
immediately began having sexual relations with the inhabitants, thus creating a mixed culture
that is very evident to this day. Many of the tribes were eradicated due to the diseases brought
to the country by the Europeans, and to this day there is a population of 200,000 indigenous
tribes left in Brazil, (Brazil History).
Brazil and the U.S have a long history of deepening people to people ties through
exchanges in energy, health, education, innovation and science and technology, (World Factbook

1. What are the major elements and dimensions of culture in this region?
1.1 Communication
Communication in Brazil is primarily Brazilian Portuguese; English is not primarily
spoken and it is imperative to speak Portuguese when having to deal with major commercial
centers. Although many senior and middle executives speak English very well, they often leave
Brazil to study English abroad in the USA or Europe. Brazilians, often find that speaking
Spanish to communicate with them insulting. Brazil is one of the many Latin countries whose
communication tends to be predominately oral than it is written. Today, there are more than one
hundred and fifty languages and dialects spoken in Brazil, with the influx of immigrants the
languages of Brazil consist of Dutch, Japanese (380,000), Korean (37,000), North Levantine
Spoken Arabic, Spanish (460,000), Turoyo, Vlax Romani. In a population of 204,260,000
(2015 USCB) people, the primary language is Portuguese, (Duncan, 2016).
Although, some languages spoken in the country of 204,206,000 million people, is
German and Italian this is a result of these communities having been established in Brazil since
the end of the 19th century., and still preserve their language to a certain degree, (Gump, 200). It
should be noted that although Brazil is diverse in many languages, due to Brazil rising
importance in the Global Market the importance of Portuguese will rise, Cavusgil, Knight,
Riesenberger, & Yaprak, 2009). Brazilian Portuguese differs somewhat from Portuguese in
terms of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. With regional accents in Brazil, they are not
very pronounced and native Portuguese speakers have no difficulty understanding those from
other regions. Much of Brazilians are monolingual in Portuguese, although many middle-class
