SCK3703 ASSIGNMENT 3 () Introduction Using the knowledge and understanding obtained on; themes of action, development approaches, methods or techniques, principles of participatory development, internal and external assets, social problems, kinds of poverties, role of the community worker and specific challenges, case study 4 (Project with street children) will be critically discussed in the following assignment. Question One In this question case study 4 will be summarised according to the themes of action and community development approaches as well as specific methods or techniques will be recognised and discussed in relation to case study 4. 1.1) Themes of Action The Community A student social worker – who works at a drop-in centre for street children – was allocated to work with the 15 to 25 children. The management had decided to implement a gardening project and the student was asked to ensure the children participate in it. Contact Making The student was self-aware and recognised that management wanted to impose this project on to the children. However, he understood that in order to maintain a good relationship with the organisation and to fit in he needed to do as asked but he explained that the needs of the children will come first. Upon meeting the children the student introduced himself and explained his role as a facilitator and the project and what it entails. He had to remember to keep his language levels at the children’s level therefore not using any complex words. The student then engaged the children in a discussion so he could learn about them as there was no screening process done for this project. He made sure to actively listen to them, be non-judgemental of the children and show empathy towards them. Needs Analysis SCK3703 ASSIGNMENT 3 () As the student became more familiar with the children he realised that this project was not satisfying their needs. They were not interested in the gardening project and were only partaking in it because they feared being reprimanded and denied food. He then started asking them what they wanted and found that to them, being accepted and understood by the communities around the shelter was needed more than gardening skills and money. They did not want to be treated as criminals and wanted people to stop being cruel to them. When asked how they thought this could be accomplished they said that people’s views of them may change if they were given the chance to get to know the children and learn about their situation through interaction with the children via different activities. They also felt that their education levels needed to improve. Planning The vision of this community of street children was to be accepted and understood by the surrounding communities and also to improve their education. Identifying their available resources was the first task. They found that a sports grounds was nearby the centre, the wall surrounding the pool needed painting and the garden was still there. They also had access to the student teachers from the training college who could help teach them. The two main goals namely; ensuring others would accept and understand the street children and to improve their education was set. Implementation To implement these new projects, the student first had to attain permission from management. Once management approved the projects, they sent the children sports equipment and paint to get them started. A committee was formed, which contained some of the children, the student and a fulltime staff member and they organised outings, interactions and activities with the surrounding communities. A rule that only those part of the contributing to the community were allowed to use the resources, ensured that participation was maximised and commitment was shown. Eventually, the children took responsibility over the project and they would organise the activities themselves
