Exam (elaborations) NR 506 Week 1 TD
Please discuss the four spheres of political action in nursing. In addition, please develop a brief argument sharing how these spheres are interconnected and overlapping by applying an example from your practice. What are some ethical considerations here? The nursing profession was not meant to exist as a task oriented job to only provide basic patient care. Nightingale had much higher aspirations in mind and I do believe she would be proud of the profession overall today. In today’s world, nurses are responsible for promotion, advocacy, protection and prevention of disease and injury not only for the patient but also for family members, the community, and other populations. Perhaps this is the reason nurses have decided to become more politically involved, so they can influence and effect change so that the care they provide can be improved upon. Per our textbook, the four spheres that nurses engage in are: the workplace or the workforce, the government, the community, and professional organizations or interest groups (Mason et al., 2016). The purpose of these spheres is to assist people in the comprehension of the policies. Each sphere has it’s own purpose or function but the spheres can also overlap, creating the capability of influencing others spheres as well (Mason et al., 2016). Nurses have the ability to impact policy making and in doing so can help create the change that is needed to improve healthcare as a whole. According to the ANA (2013), registered nurses have become looked upon as leaders in revamping healthcare and policy issues in order to meet the charge for change within wellness, prevention, and primary care services while also increasing the quality of care and managing the costs of it all.
