Types of research –
Confirmatory – hypothesis testing
Explanatory – hypothesis/ theory generation
Can have both in the same study but they have to both be identified and
it needs to be clear which is which
Pre – registration
Record of study design, hypotheses and data analysis
Done before you conduct a piece of research
Includes what stats tests will be used
Our study –
Conceptual replication of experiment 3 by McCabe and Castel (2008)
Used the same design and hypothesis but changes the materials – used a
meditation article instead of a criminal detection article
RESEARCH AIM - investigate how neuroimaging pictures affect
judgements of scientific merit
DESIGN – quasi experiment
CONFIRMATORY HYPOTHESIS - Participants who view the brain image
will rate the article as more convincing than participants who view the
graph image.
McCabe and Castel (2008) – viewing neuroscience images made people
rate articles as more convincing – people prefer reductionist thinking
and shortcuts
