Many diverse and complex approaches to qualitative data analysis
Thematic analysis is first method researchers should learn – gives core skills useful for other more
complex analyses (Braun and Clarke, 2006)
Using themes to conceptualize meaning is a common skills in qualitative analysis
Context is important i.e. historical, social political
Data analysis is a non-linear process – constant questioning and reflecting
, What is thematic analysis?
A method of qualitative data analysis that identifies themes within a data set
Reporting patterns and analyzing these within the data set
Thematic analysis organises and describes the data in detail.
Widely used and accessible approach but there is no clear agreement in how to do it (See Braun and Cl
2006)
Offers a flexible approach to use as a research tool
Offers an approach independent from theory (unlike some methods i.e. Discourse analysis and IPA)
