ELEMENTS OF ART  Visual artists use design elements to design visual form for visual products which will communicate information visually, and these elements are the building blocks of visual art and are all the artist has to work with.  The design elements are generally considered to be line, shape (form), space, texture and colour, and the way these elements are used in relation to one another (the design process) determines the visual form. LINE:  This is the basic structural foundation of all graphic composition and pictorial design.  Line has the physical properties of measurement and character, and can give direction.  Can be thick, thin, light, dark, bold, static, flowing, rhythmic, ponderous, hesitant, violent or dynamic. SHAPE AND MASS:  SHAPE – general outline of something. Has a surface, is flat and has length and breadth. It is 2 dimensional and can be natural or geometric.  MASS – 3 dimensional equivalent of shape. Mass refers to volume and bulk.  FIGURE – positive shape  EMPTY AREAS AROUND FIGURE – negative shape. SPACE:  2 DIMENSIONAL SPACE – used in drawings, paintings etc. Done on flat surfaces.  3 DIMENSIONAL SPACE – buildings, sculptures and compositions. The illusion of space and depth are created by the following:  Placement of objects  Overlapping  Atmospheric and aerial perspective – colour is subdued for objects that are further away.  Size of objects  foreshortening TEXTURE:  TEXTURE = the degree of roughness/smoothness of the surface.  TACTILE TEXTURE = what one can feel  VISUAL TEXTURE = creates the illusion of texture COLOUR: The physical properties of colour are:  Hue – the pure colour
