Think of a story-telling lesson that you would teach to your grade R class. After telling the
story to the learners you will ask them to retell the story individually to assess their
language development. Design a checklist that you would use to assess the learners’
language development. Your answer should include the following:
(i) An explanation of the topic of a story (2)
(ii) An explanation of how you will present the lesson (5)
(iii) Design your checklist (5)
(i) The story-telling lesson I will be presenting to my grade R class is the story of The Ugly
Duckling. I will explain to my learners the main themes of the story which is the theme of
acceptance and how the feelings of acceptance are unique to every individual. The Ugly
Duckling is a fairy tale with the moral lesson for people to accept themselves for who they
really are.
(ii) When presenting the lesson I will have my learners sit with me on the carpet in a circle so we
are all on the same level. I will tell the story by using gestures, body language and movement to
ensure that my learners are constantly intrigued. By creating mental images using descriptions
made with all the senses so that the learners will understand every part of the story. Eye contact
with each of your students is also important as it may emphasize what is important.
(iii) Checklist:
Language Skill:
Ability to describe objects (big; small, green)
Intelligible speech that is easily understood (maybe
with mispronunciations here and there)
Ability to understand and carry out three instructions.
Knowledge of objects and their use. (broom, spoon,
jersey)
Production of grammatically correct speech.

Children’s learning is best supported through a play-based, informal approach towards
teaching and learning that promotes the holistic development of children. Play as a
pedagogy is regarded as one of the effective methods of developing the child holistically.
Briefly discuss and give practical examples of how you would apply a play-based, informal
approach to develop your learners in the following areas:
1. Physically,
2. Emotionally,
3. Socially and
