600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet

Please write the essay under the four headings given.

a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:

Authentic material is any material written in English that was not created for intentional use in the
English language classroom, these were written by native speakers and published in contexts for
native-speaker consumption. Using this content to teach the English language can make the
learning process even more engaging, imaginative, and motivating for students. It can also be
useful to elicit genuine responses from learners.
They differ greatly from instructional materials because of the implicit assumptions surrounding
their existence. Authentic materials assume linguistic competence and comprehension.

AM represents the target language in its normal form. (Not slowed down and emphasized in all the
right places), that is why they are called ‘’authentic’’. These help prepare learners for the 'real'
world of communication.


b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.

I have selected Steve Job’s Stanford Commencement address as a listening text for my class of 15
students because I believe there is something for everyone in his speech. He has spoken about his
college days and how he dropped out from conventional courses and took calligraphy classes
because his heart led him to that. As four of my students have university places for the next
academic session, hence they will find some common ground in this instance. The other instance
he mentions, is him losing the job he worked ten years for. Four working professions who are there
in my class will relate to his story with their own work struggles.
Most of the vocabulary items that I have selected are phrases, as the grade level of this class is
advanced C1 to C2 adults. They already know and are using words like fascinated, campus,
throughout. They need to feel the language as used by the natives, and the best way to do that is
to discuss phrases rather than individual words.

c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:

Activities for parts 2 and 3, that I have chosen are skill-based and will help them to enhance their
reflective, communicative, and social skills. These students are at a proficient level of language
usage, they just need a platform to incorporate metacognition while using English. The best way to
learn and acquire a language is to think in that language.
Matching activity will help the students to get comfortable and decide which meaning is suitable
