Week 6 Discussion Post 1 Rebuttals and Refutations Anticipating readers' objections is one way to determine what other sections to include and support in your paper. Practice writing a rebuttal or a refutation by taking your thesis and considering the point of view of someone who believes differently or even the opposite of the argument you are making. To do this, review Chapter 10, pp. 449-452 and post a paragraph that summarizes an oppositional point of view to your thesis and then refutes it. As peers, reply to one another explaining whether or not your classmates are presenting the opposition objectively and whether the refutation is logical. Give one another ideas or suggestions for points that may be left out or might need to be further developed. The paragraph you draft here can be used in a section of your Second Draft this week. According to Johnson-Sheehan & Paine, "If you're discussing something arguable, then there must be at least one other side to the issue" (2013, pg. 449). Regarding my topic fad diets, by disclosing to the reader the opposition viewpoint; I am letting the reader know that I recognize that there may be an opposing viewpoint to my argument before offering a counter-argument. The refutation to my argument that fad diets are not a practical solution to achieve healthy long-term sustainable weight loss, that only by eating a well-balanced diet and moderate exercise can help you achieve that is as follows. Fad diets are a multi-billion-dollar business in the United States. On television, you see numerous celebrities using these types of diets to lose weight. We all know, that being overweight or obese puts you at risk for developing high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and joint pain. So how can fad diets be bad for your health if they can help you lose weight? The fad diets on the market today are popular because they do produce short-term weight loss results rapidly. Also, there have been studies that have shown that low carb and high-fat diets can help you drop pounds fairly quickly and easy. I believe the benefits of these type of diets far out way the risk, considering that obesity has become an epidemic across the globe. References Johnson-Sheehan, R., & Paine, C. (2013). Will you add graphs, charts, or images to your draft? Why or why not? According to Johnson-Sheehan and Paine; diagrams, tables or pictures are useful add-ons to include in your paper. Images are particularly beneficial if you are providing statistics to the reader because it helps the reader to visualize what they are reading and helps to validate what the writer is trying to say (2013). I do plan on using a few images and graphs in my course project. I believe that adding a visual element will add to my argument that fad diets are not a practical solution to achieve healthy long-term sustainable weight loss, that only by eating a well-balanced diet and moderate exercise can help you achieve that.
