PSY 205 Week 4 Emerging Adulthood and Culture Emerging adulthood has been the work of psychologist Jeffery Arnett since the early 90’s. His work has identified the meaning of emerging adulthood and how it varies amongst individuals of varying cultures. Within the modern Colombian culture, the expectations of an emerging adult are becoming more independent with each generation. The various cultures around the world have also experienced their own evolution with emerging adulthood. Continuing to middle adulthood, this period in an adult’s life has various implications. Some of these may be positive while others may be negative from physical and cognitive standpoints. What is Emerging Adulthood? Arnett reports emerging adulthood as the period when an individual ends adolescence and enters full adulthood. A life full of responsibilities such as those arising from a career or serious intimate relationships. Throughout the transition of adolescence to adulthood, young people will encounter various internal obstacles as they undergo the journey of finding themselves. This occurs in fives stages where some may face all while others only some. The five stages of emerging adults are age of identity exploration, age of instability, age of self-focus, age of feeling in between, and age of possibilities. Each of these features will play a major developmental role in the transition process of adulthood.
