Importance of Professional Collaboration Leadership requires professional collaboration between all members of the healthcare team. In order to be an effective leader you must collaborate with other members of your team. Making process changes within a facility takes the work of the whole team working together and not just one individual. During my Leadership Experience Hand Hygiene project I collaborated with my administrator and lead community health nurse regarding our current hand hygiene practices not being evidence based. I provided the current hand hygiene evidence based research and the CDC hand hygiene guidelines for healthcare workers and compared these to how we are currently practicing within our facility. By collaborating with my administrator and lead nurse we were able to develop a plan to change our current process to meet CDC guidelines and evidence based research. We also collaborated with other employees’ within the facility to get their input on the situation and brainstorm ideas and ways to improve our practice. I have never had any leadership roles until I recently took on another role of Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Supervisor. In this role I am to supervise our breastfeeding peer counselor at the Health Department. In order for me to be an effective leader I must collaborate with the breastfeeding peer counselor and discuss how she feels things are going when working with her clientele as I am not in the room when she meets with her clients. In order for me to see how she feels her process is going with her clients I must collaborate with her to see how she feels things are going in order to effectively lead her. I see the amount of collaboration my administrator puts in and look to her as a rolemodel. She is an outstanding leader to our group here at the Health Department and is always This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :16:06 GMT -05:00 This study resource was shared via CourseH collaborating with all staff members regarding any changes, new policies, or ideas. She always includes all staff members and wants their buy in when it comes to process changes. She is not a nurse herself so is always coming to the nursing staff as we are the ones who take care of the patients wanting our buy in when it comes to process changes. There must be collaboration in order to be an effective leader. E2a. Professional Mission Statement My professional nursing career is what drives me as a person. I love going home each day feeling that every single day I am working to care for others and make a change in someone’s life. Florence Nightingale’s theory of environment focuses on ways to reach health goals and cure illness (Petiprin, 2015). This theory ties into my nursing practice as both a Community Health Nurse and an Obstetrics Nurse. Her focus was to change the patient’s environment which would in turn change their health. This theory ties into my practice as a Labor & Delivery nurse in the aspect of, ensuring that my patients achieve the best health outcome. I am responsible for ensuring safe and competent care of my patient as well as promoting a healthy environment for them. My profession as a Public Health Nurse ties into Nightingales Environmental Theory through health promotion. As a Public Health Nurse it is my duty to promote a healthy environment and healthier community. Currently at the Health Department all of the Public Health Nurses including myself are advocating for a smoking ordinance within our city limits to promote clean smoke free air for our community members. Research shows the unhealthy effects that tobacco smoke has on the health of individuals. In my efforts to change the environment of smoke filled air within our community this will in turn result in healthier lives and decreases in health disparities of residents in our community. Starting my BSN program with WGU has provided me with the skills and education I need in order to be an effective leader for my community. My professional mission statement and the theory of Florence Nightingale will continue to guide my professional nursing practice and the care that I give to my patients. It is my duty as a Public Health Nurse to promote a healthy environment and we are currently working on that with advocating for a smoking ordinance within our city limits.
