NR 439 : Using a PICO (T) Framework and Evidence to Develop Care Practices
Using a PICO (T) Framework and Evidence to Develop Care Practices The specific care issue that will be evaluated in this article is finding interdisciplinary collaborative ways to reduce medication errors in the healthcare setting to increase patient safety. The specific question being researched is: For patients in acute care settings with medication needs, How effective is reinforcing the five+ rights and communication techniques versus increasing computer literacy, lead to a reduction of medication error events over the next fiscal year. In breaking down PICO (T) we are able to first address what we really want to know. In (P) we have addressed who is being affected in this question scenario. Before we can answer the (I), we must first search for research on medication errors to evaluate why the problem may be happening in the first place. It is clear that medication error events are the variable in question. This is where the search for EBP research comes into play. In the (C) step of comparing which method will be most effective in resolving the issue, it will require one controlled group to be evaluated on the five + rights and communication skills improvement and one controlled group to be evaluated on computer literacy. We would need to do research on both of these areas to determine which EBP models have been used for its effectiveness. (O) is determined in the next step as to the outcome of the models used and their results in the study and in clinical practice. The goal is to determine which method will be the most effective in reducing medication error events. The process will be evaluated annually for its effectiveness and needed revision. .....
