Rasmussen CollegeCHEM 101PBModule 06 Written Assignment_021019
1. You are the only phlebotomist on duty one evening. You receive orders to collect a STAT hemoglobin and hematocrit in the ER, STAT blood cultures on another ER patient, and STAT glucose in ICU. Which STAT specimen would you collect first? Explain how you made your choice. STAT is a high priority and needed quickly for effective treatment of the patient. STAT in ER should be first but we have two STATS in the ER, therefore we have to give priority in order of the tube. STAT blood culture on ER patient is the first one because the tube is yellow top tube. Second, STAT hemoglobin and hematocrit in the ER with the lavender top tube. Lavender is after light blue, but it is STAT in the ER before glucose or light blue top tube. Last one is the glucose in ICU with the light blue tube. 2. You arrive to collect a blood specimen from an inpatient. The patient is not wearing an ID band. There is an ID band attached to the nightstand next to the bed. The information on that ID band matches your requisition. The name and date of birth stated by the patient also match your requisition. What do you do? Go to the nurse station, get an ID band, attach it and then proceed to only draw the specimen after an ID band has been applied. Unless the patient has a condition that would prevent the attachment of arm band, like sever burn, only an attached arm ID band can be used for identification. 3. You are to collect a blood specimen from an inpatient. The name of the physician on your requisition does not match the physician’s name on the patient’s ID band. What do you do? If it is not match, there is no drawing of blood. The information with phlebotomist should match with the patient ID band. Talking with the nurse is needed in this situation. 4. You are to collect a fasting glucose specimen from an outpatient. The patient is chewing gum but assures you that it is sugarless gum. When you ask if he is fasting, he admits to having had a cup of black coffee. How do you proceed? check with the patient’s nurse to see if the specimen should still be collected. Collect the next day when he or she is fasting. 5. You have tried two times unsuccessfully to collect a specimen from a patient. You now see an excellent wrist vein that you had not noticed before. What should you do? After trying twice, you have to stop trying to check. You have to call another phlebotomist. 6. You must collect blood cultures from a 7-year-old child. The child is crying and squirming in the chair. The child’s mother is getting frustrated and upset. How would you handle the situation? What method of restraint would you use, and what equipment would you choose to collect the specimen? Ask the parent to relax and help the patient and ask additional staff members to help. If not use an arm restraint using soft restraint.
