ELIXIRS AND LINCTUSES
( Definition ) An elixir is a clear sweetened hydro alcoholic liquid preparation that is intended
for internal use.
Type of elixirs :
1_ medicated (contains active ingredient agents )
2_ non- medicated (contains flavoring agents )
Solvent :
1_ primary solvents ( Alcohol )
2_ additional solvents ( syrup , glycerin )
Difference between elixir and syrup :
1_ They differ from syrups in containing less sugar or not at all as sweetened agent .(by glycerin)
Difference between spirit and Elixirs :
1_ Elixir are usually contain a smaller percentage of alcohol than spirits
2_ Elixirs should always be clear so talk powder or purified silicone are usually used during
filtration .
Uses :
1_ Antipyretic
2_ Analgesic
Example for Elixir with method preparation :
1-PARCETAMOL ELIXIR
Send 50 ml
Paracetamol 2.4 g
Alcohol 95% 10 ml
Propylene Glycol 10 ml
Chloroform Spirit(5%) 2 ml
Amaranth Solution (0.2%) 2 ml
Syrup to 100 ml
, Method:- Paracetamol is weighed and dissolved in the mixture of alcohol and peopylene
glycol.Add chloroform Spirit , Amaranth solution and adjust with syrup to final volume
Calamine lotion
Defecation :
Are dilute aqueous solution or suspension designed for application to the skin or hair or
treatment of eyes ( for external use )
Use of lotion :
1_ Antiseptic
2_ Analgesic
3_ Anti inflammatory .
Objective :
To preparation of calamine lotion .
Calculation :
Factor = Actual / theatrical

CALAMINE LOTION (B.P.) Send 30 ml
Calamine 150 g
Zinc Oxide 50 g
Sodium Citrate 5 g
Bentonite 30 g
Liquefied phenol 5 ml
Glycerol 50 ml
purified water to 1000 ml
Method:
Triturate the calamine, the zinc oxide and the bentonite with the
solution of sodium citrate in about 700 ml of purified water and add the
liquefied phenol, the glycerol and sufficient water to produce 1000 ml
