COMPUTER GENERATIONS
From 1946 onwards, the development of electronic& Computers can be divided into five
generations, depending upon the technology used. Charles Babage is the father of the
computer. He developed a Difference Engine.
FIRST GENERATION (1945-60)
The first electronics Computer was completed in 1946 by a team led by Professors Eckert and
Mushily. This computer was called Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator
(ENIAC). It uses 19000 Vacuum tubes and it occupied an area 150
sq. mts.
In 1949, Dr. John Von Neumann developed the idea of the stored programs. The first
Computer using this principle was EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator).
In 1950, the production of stored program electronic computers began and the first product
was UNIVAC I.

Babage's Difference Engine
Important Features :
These Computers used Vacuum tubes and the components were joined by copper wires.
These computers used Punched Card as input device. during working Computer were mainly
used for scientific and engineering purpose. The most popular brand of first generation
computer was IBM-650.
The size of the computers were very big and they required huge electric power. (Each tube
consumed about half a Watt power) The copper wires and Filaments used in this generation
computers were heated
The speed of operation was very slow and had a low reliability factor. (It take 200 micro
seconds to add two numbers and multiply two numbers) Computer program was mainly done
in machine language. a
