TYPES OF COMPUTERS
A computer system is a machine which is used to process data at a great speed and with a
maximum efficiency. Computer system may be classified according to the type of data they
are capable for manipulating. The following chart clearly shows the different classification of
computers.
Computer
Analog Digital Hybrid
General Purpose Digital Computer (GPDC) Special Purpose Digital computer (SPDC)
Computers are classified into three types. They are
1) Analog computers
2) Digital computers and
3) Hybrid computers.
Digital computers are again classified into two categories. They are
a) General Purpose Digital Computers (GPDC) and
b) Special Purpose Digital Computers (SPDC).
1. Analog Computer
The Analog computer don't directly interact with numbers, but rather deal with
valuable measurement along a continuous scale. Data obtained through measuring instrument
is known as continuous data. A constituent checking of ECG of an heart patient on the screen
is an example for a continuous data. Analog computer measures continuous electrical or
physical magnitude like voltage, pressure, water flow etc. Analog computers are used in the
scientific and industrial fields where values of physical moments are to be measured.
2. Digital Computer
A Digital computer operates directly on decimal digits or symbols. It takes input and give
outputs in the form of numerals, letters and special characters. Digital computers are
generally used for business and scientific data processing. It is possible to store large volume
of data in the digital computers. Digital computers are classified into two categories based on
their purpose.
They are
General Purpose Digital Computers (GPDC) and
Special Purpose Digital ( Computers (SPDC).
