Identifying Needs for Counseling
Objectives:
• Distinguish the needs of individuals, organizations, groups, and communities.
• Determine the counseling needs of individuals, groups, and communities.
• Understand the importance of needs analysis in identifying the specific
needs of clients.
For individuals
In the field if mental health, there is an emperically supported notion that the
counseling and theapy procesess, including assessment, treatment, and follow-up
should be individualized.
The counselor can determine the client’s needs based on the following:
• history of the client’s present condition
• results of counseling assessment and evaluation
• in-depth interview with the client and people who interact with them
• referral form another professional or from an institution
For groups
Needs assessment is an evaluative and objective process of data gathering and
interpretation that focuses on determining specific programs and services for
clients.
Identifying guiding questions and goals (goal setting)
• In this stage, counselors work with clients to understand the current group
culture, challenges and issues, strengths, and dynamics.
