Summary:
This factsheet was made 100 years after women gained the right to stand as a candidate in Dutch
politics in 1917. It presents recent numbers about equal representation of women in Dutch politics. In
1919, Dutch women gained the right to vote, and the number of women in politics rose. However,
since 2012 there seems to be a stagnation. After the 2017 elections only 35% of the Dutch House of
Representatives was female.
In Dutch municipalities the percentage of women in local councils has increased from 26% in 2010, to
28% in 2014. The percentage of women is higher in the large cities and lower in provinces, such as
Limburg and Zeeland. Moreover, almost 4 out of 5 mayors are men. The percentage of women in the
Dutch water boards has also risen, and the chairpersons are also more often women. On the other
hand, only 8% of the king’s commissioners are female.
The Netherlands was on the 26 th position of the World Ranking of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in
2017. In 2014 they were on the 16th position. The Dutch parliament consisted of only 42% women in
2017, and the Senate of 34,7%. The Netherlands has never had a female Prime Minister, even though
15 out of 28 EU member states have had one. Just like most other EU member states, the percentage
of women in the Dutch delegation in the European Parliament is higher than in the national
parliament.
Diversity in politics is important. The parliament should be a mirror of society, to make the political
agenda match the issues at play in all layers of society. The population has to be able to identify with
the representatives. There is still a long way to go towards equal representation, even though women
have had the right to stand as a candidate for over 100 years now. There has been an increase since the
1960s, but the stagnation in recent years show a negative trend (Atria Kennisinstituut voor
Emancipatie en Vrouwengeschiedenis, 2017).

Reflection:
I think it is sad that there is still such a long way to go towards equal representation of men and
women in Dutch politics. To reflect society at best, the representation in politics should just be 50-50.
Even though some people think that it does not matter, who can make better decisions about women’s
lives than women themselves? Many people tend to just settle for the situation that we are in now. Of
course, women are represented better in politics than 100 years ago, but it is still not an equal
