South Korea- Korean Assumed Knowledge:
Language: as the names of the tenses they already know, subject,
auxiliary verb, negative form, etc.
2. Some students are maybe familiar with the term ‘first
conditionals’.

we are using present simple in the if-clause of the first
conditional, but we are talking about a future or a near-future

, 2. The most common mistake is to put will in the conditional
clause.
E.g. Incorrect:
Joey will not complete his assignment unless you will ask him.
The conditional clause must remain in the simple present
tense.
Solution: Drilling exercises and controlled activities.
3. Students may ask that why are we not using future tense in
the conditional clause if the possible events are yet to take
place.
Solution: Practice and concept check questions.
4. They might get confused in the usage of does and doesn’t.
If it rains, I will take my car.
If it doesn’t rain, I will walk to the store.
Though they are quite aware of the usage of do and does in present
simple, they might need some revisiting. (While using does and
doesn’t we remove ‘s’ from the base verb).
Solution: Revisiting exercises for the use of do and does.
5. Students might start using zero conditionals like if I work too
hard, I get tired.
Solution: Explaining to them, that we cannot use universal truths
or facts that are always true in first conditionals. Telling them a
little about zero conditionals and assuring them that we will come
back to it in further sessions.
6. Students might put comma after if, even when the sentence
starts with a result clause.
Solution : Practice and drilling exercises.
