Week 5 DQ 1 Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are therapies and treatments that are not the typical modern medicine remedies (Grand Canyon University [GCU], 2007). CAM is any medical system, practice, or product that is not the standard care (National Institutes of Health [NIH], 2012). CAM can be used along with, in place of, or a combination of the treatments with conventional medicine. There are many various categories of CAM therapies and treatments. Examples include homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, therapeutic touch, magnetic therapy, T’ai chi, chiropractic, mediation, support groups, music therapy, vitamins, immune augmentative therapy, herbs and herbal extracts, spiritual healing, etc. These are just a few of the many different CAMs available. There are many patients that refer to CAM therapies and treatments. People of all backgrounds. However, CAM is typically found to be used by women and patients with higher educations as well as higher incomes (National Center for Complimentary and Integrated Health [NCCIH], 2017). Individuals use CAM therapies for an array of illnesses and diseases.
