HUM 303 Week 1: Ancient Art: Eastern and Western Origins Discussion DeVry University Week 1: Ancient Art: Eastern and Western Origins - Discussion Ancient Works of Art (graded) Choose a work of art from the reading in Chapter 1. Discuss how the work is a reflection of the ancient culture that created it. Also, did anything particularly surprise or impress you about the work of art or the ancient people who created it? Responses Response Author Date/Time Ziggurat Bradley Ward 7/5/2020 I think that for me architecture is some of the most impressive art simply because of the sheer size of it. This is why I chose the Ziggurat at Ur as the piece of art that I wanted pyramid shows how the Mesopotamians treasured and even worshiped the sun because it was very tall and went to a point at the top. It is also believed that this structure was sacrifices to the gods. RE: Ziggurat Martin Velasquez 7/10/201 This pyramid made many years ago is definitely one great work of art made by human beings even those it was used for the wrong reasons to kill and sacrifice people, amazing how they got the ideas of doing it for the gods in a way that it is still standing till this day. Not only that but the way like you said that they would hide their tr one may ever get them, plus the incredible amount of people that it took to build one pyramid is truly amazing. Ancient Works of Art Salvador Cruz 7/5/2020 Im impressed on how many articular is designed from their shier size to thei dept into telling a story. One that stood out was the figure 1.11 the Kachina doll(Maalo). It says tha has living spirits or know to have some which i think if they have praised this doll their are bound to be filled with history. Its by when or how long it has been worshiped. Chauvet Cave Paintings Darcy Baggs 7/5/2020 I was pretty surprised by the Chauvet Cave wall paintings (found on page 2 of the text); what amazed me was the use of perspectiv somewhat 3 dimensional shading that was used. Most cave paintings that I think of are the very “flat” 2 dimensional animals, so th were dated around 30,000 BCE shows that the concept of art is not on a linear “learning” scale. I think the work reflects that this particular culture was more interested in an artistic approach to their cave drawings. As it was poi cave drawings were thought to be somewhat ritualistic or cater to successful hunting. The paintings found in the Chauvet Cave were that were not hunted, however; which leads me to think they were merely telling stories of some sort or just documenting things th whereas most cave paintings are thought to be something to the effect of conjuring a successful hunt, these seemed (to me) more t people documented things around them.
