Running Head: PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES Nursing Theory A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals is the Environmental theory by Florence Nightingale. The Environmental theory examines how the environment can help with healing and recovery. It focuses on factors such as air, light, noise, warmth, cleanliness. The Environmental theory has influenced my nursing value on altruism. By creating a nurturing environment so that my patients can heal and recover faster, I demonstrate compassion and caring. The Environmental theory has influenced my nursing goal on delivering excellent care by putting my complete attention to my patients’ needs, altering the surroundings to create a soothing, healing environment for them (Cherry & Jacob, 2017). Excellent Nursing Practices To apply the Nightingale’s Environmental Theory to plan excellent nursing practices, the nurses make certain that the patients’ rooms are free from any clutter and dust, beds are dry and wrinkle-free, and temperature is within range. Wrinkled linens can increase friction on the patient’s skin and may cause discomfort and pressure ulcers. Right temperature is important as being too warm or cold can rapidly use up a person’s energy, leaving the patient chronically fatigued. Maintaining suitable temperature is essential to patient’s recovery. Ventilation allows for proper air exchange to remove unwanted odors and help with infection control (Cherry & Jacob, 2017).
