Analysis of pesticides and Fertilizer in water by TLC & GC
, Introduction
• The extensive use of pesticides causes the pests to develop resistance against it.
• The overuse of these pesticides also results in the destruction of beneficial organisms.
• Pesticides that are used in urban landscaping contain chemicals like diazinon
& chlorpyifos that are poisonous to a number of organisms, including fish and
invertebrates.
• Pesticides is the main cause of reduction of insect’s populations that acts as an
essential food source for birds and further wildlife-organisms.
• The analysis of these pesticides is of the most important apprehension.
Pesticide residues, PCBs and PAHs
Principle
• The residuum of pesticides is extracted by the use of solvent extraction with the help
of separating funnel which involves the phenomena of liquid-liquid partition.
• It is then estimated by Gas Chromatographic technique (GC).
• The Gas Chromatographic instrument with detector like electron capture & nitrogen
phosphorous.
• Sometimes the hyphenated techniques like GC-MS in which Gas Chromatography
coupled with Mass Spectrometry is used.
• The residue contents are governed by carrying out the comparison between standard
and the response generated.
