Q.1- Define solar constant. What is its standard value?
A-1- Solar constant, the total radiation energy received from the Sun per unit of time per unit
of area on a theoretical surface perpendicular to the Sun’s rays and at Earth’s mean distance
from the Sun. The value of the constant is approximately 1.366 kilowatts per square metre.
Q.2- What is surface azimuth angle?
A-2- The solar azimuth angle is the azimuth angle of the Sun's position. This horizontal
coordinate defines the Sun's relative direction along the local horizon, whereas the solar zenith
angle defines the Sun's apparent altitude
i. It is defined as the horizontal angle between the projection of the normal to the horizontal
surface and the North-South line.
ii. Initially when the edge of the surface is aligned with East West line =0. When the edge of
the surface aligns with the edge of horizontal plane, PM’ rotates through 90∘
iii. In case we rotate the surface in the opposite direction, angle changes in the opposite
direction the value of V are ± 180∘
Q.3- On what factors does the collector efficiency of a solar flat plate collector depend?
A-3- The main parameters affecting the performance of solar collector are area, absorber
absorptivity and emissivity, emissivity of glass cover, temperature of absorber plate, collector
tilt angle and number of glass covers.
Q.4- Describe the difference between the Direct radiation and Diffuse radiation.
