Body Fluid Compartments PHYSIOLOGY QUICKSHEETS
OVERVIEW
Why do we need to understand Body Fluid Compartments?
- To determine whether there are problems in our body fluids, which are associated to different
organs of our body that builds up our body.
Skin Eccrine glands Sweat
Fluid as an essential
nutrient to our body
Kidney Urea Urine
The Body
How does fluid affects our body, and why is it so important?
It makes our organs work by supplying Fluid also can be an indicator whether our body is
our cells with certain fluids that contains functioning properly or not
essential nutrients.
Regulates our body temperature by the It makes blood circulation possible becaue blood
concept of hydration and dehydration is basically a fluid
The Fluid and Compartments
Human body has approximately 60%
water
Extracellular fluid
This percentage can vary upon different
factors such as Age, and Body mass
Cell membrane
The overall amount of fluid in our body
Intracellular fluid is called Total Body Water or TBW
, The overall amount of fluid in our body is called Total Body Water or TBW
Anatomy of the Total body water
It’s important to remember that there are 2 sites where water is located;
#1. Inside the cells #2. Outside the cells
INTRA = INSIDE EXTRA = OUTSIDE
INTRACELLULAR = ICF EXTRACELLULAR = ECF
We get these fluids by drinking WATER or any type of fluids which is then delivered by our GI tract and
then absorbed by the capillary walls of the small intestine, excess fluids will proceed in the large intestine
and then secreted as a urea from the kidneys which will then release in the external environment.
