1. The South African education system, like any other education system, consists of
the following four different categories of structures or components. Discuss
these four (4) components of an education system using examples from South
African education practice:
1.1 Schools and other types of educational systems
➢ A formal schooling system has a lot of different types of institutions for education and
training, which strive to meet diverse needs of learners.
➢ These types of institutions include:
❖Pre-primary schools,
❖Primary schools,
❖Secondary schools
❖Institutions of higher education (Technicon, universities and colleges)
➢ Different schools may specialise in various fields such as: agriculture, music, general
academic, science and technician.
➢ Schools are also differentiated into phases, annual stages or grades.
➢ Institutions of higher education also specialises in various fields for example
universities caters for people who want to become teachers and accountants etc.

1.2 Governance and management structures
➢ The system of schooling depends on an effective and efficient system of governance.
➢ Structures are created to provide education and training in a planned and organised
manner.
➢ Examples of Structures would include the following:
❖The Ministry of education and training,
❖Structures for educational planning,
❖Department of education on national and provincial levels,
❖Control Boards,
❖Teacher registration boards
❖Advisory Bodies

1.3 Support or auxiliary services
➢ Many highly specialised tasks are included in the provision of education and training,
the institutions however don’t have the capacity to carry out all the tasks on their own, thus
for example a teacher might need some form of additional help or support to carry out
certain tasks.
➢ This is where support or auxiliary services come in, to provide teaching practitioners
with specialised help. In South Africa some support services are inadequate or absent
➢ Examples of support or auxiliary services include:
❖Feeding schemes,
❖Media and library services,
❖School hostels
❖Health services

1.4 Various stakeholders with an interest in education
➢ These are people who have a keen interest in the education of the country
➢ Includes parents, community, teacher organisations, unions, etc. They are important
factors in the process of formulating new policies.
➢ They offer support and contribute to quality education
➢ The function is to provide and or support quality education and training for learners in a
community.
➢ The learners are the core around which every activity in the system should revolve.

2. A sound partnership between schools, business and industry has a number of
benefits for all partners. Discuss five (5) benefits that would indicate that this
venture is beneficial to the learner and the school.
➢ Learners are able to visit business and industry sites, thereby gaining insight into the
requirements of a specific job.
➢ This will motivate learners to pursue a career in a specific occupation.
➢ Assists teachers in receiving up – to – date information about the needs of the workplace.
➢ Assists the school in making use of expert assistance from businesses for policy making
and resource allocation.
➢ Cooperation between schools, business and industry allows schools to understand what
knowledge and skills they need to equip learners for so that they are prepared to work in a
particular field of interest.

Question 3
Discuss in detail each of the following leadership styles:
3.1 autocratic leadership style –
➢ It is a militaristic style of leadership that destroys learners initiative
➢ often results in loss of respect of authority
➢ Outdated style of leadership
➢ The teacher commands and the learners obey quietly
➢ No departure from the rules set by the teacher is tolerated

3.2 laissez-faire style of leadership –
➢ In contrast to the autocratic leadership style,
➢ Allows learners the scope to do exactly as they please in the classroom.
➢ The educator-leader voices no opposition
➢ there is no form of discipline.
➢ Unacceptable because it seriously undermines the teaching-learning process.

Education provision in modern communities is extremely complex in nature. Justify
this statement with substantial reasons.

1.1 the factors making education provision in post-modern societies an extremely complex
and specialised task

Most post-modern societies are multicultural.
➢ This means that many languages are spoken, various religions are practiced, and
different ethnic groups contribute to their own cultural heritage.
➢ The diverse needs of learners from various groups should be considered
➢ Within every community, education should also provide for the individual needs of a
variety of learners.
❖Each learner is unique; while at the same time like all other in many ways.
❖The learners go through various phases in their development, with changing needs at
every developmental phase.
❖Effective teachers understand this and try to learn as much possible about their
students.
➢ The world economy is characterised by the development towards a global economy.
➢ Technological innovation flourishes and is accompanied by a corresponding escalation in
technological knowledge and expertise.
➢ Teachers have the power to make technology a force for good in their learners’ lives.
However, teachers are faced with multiple challenges beyond the problems of merely
teaching learners to operate technology.
➢ Healthy work ethic and increased proficiency in basic literacy and numeracy is essential
skills required in the contemporary world of work.
➢ Post-modern workplace demands
❖Good communication skills,
❖Interpersonal skills,
❖Problem-solving skills,
❖The ability to learn independently,
❖Critical and creative thinking skills,
❖Adaptability
❖The ability to function well in a team.
