My two dads and I were out for dinner. A guy out of nowhere came to our table and
started yelling homophobic curses against my dads. He specifically said that my dads were a
disgrace to the community and that they are a curse to humanity. He also went ahead and
added that I will have a weird and miserable life due to not having a mom and also due to my
dad marrying another guy instead of a woman. He said that he was sure we lived a miserable
life and that's me included should not be in existence.
This experience was quite harsh to me as well as my parents, since then they prefer
doing dinners at home or going to restaurants that support homosexuals’ attitudes and beliefs
to avoid any chance of discrimination. I have a hard time at school and church. The negative
views towards my parents during social interactions are evident. This has led to me having
very low self-esteem due to bias and stereotyping. This has made it hard for me to share even
my family experiences among friends and classmates due to the entire idea that homosexual
men are fundamentally different from heterosexuals in some manner.
Extended family members frequently approach my parents differently than
heterosexual ones, and this discrimination can be compounded by parenting relationships
(Prendergast,2018). Extended family members may regard parenting as an essential step in
validating a relationship for same-sex couples, or they may hold biased and discriminatory
views on parenting, including rejecting one parent's relationship with the children.
In a family counseling session, I would open up to the counselor about my encounters
with discrimination uncountable times while in school, church, and social spaces like
restaurants like the scenario I mentioned earlier. I would tell the counselor about my recent
experience where I would also open up about how these scenarios are making me feel
different from every other family because all these scenarios can be a little overwhelming. I
would like the counselor to know all the questions I ask myself and how to go about all the
questions I get asked by other people in school or any other place when people get to know
