WMBA 6040 Business Management Literature Review Fall 2020 Chapter 2: Literature Review 2.1 Introduction This research paper aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 and its lockdown on the UK stock market based on sectoral performance. Many recent studies have focused on the effects of coronavirus on the country or global level(Liu et al., 2020; Bash, 2020; Chaudhary, Bakhshi and Gupta, 2020); however, few studies focus on the various sectors in UK stock market and use COVID-19 lockdown as an important event to analyse the sector indices performance. This chapter will present relevant literature that exhibits the related theoretical framework. 2.2 COVID-19 impact on the stock market On March 11, 2020, WHO declared the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic, denoting that more than 118,000 cases are detected in 114 countries, and 4,291 people have lost their lives (World Health Organization, 2020). This virus causes an unidentified pneumonia, which was firstly detected in Wuhan, China. The impacts of COVID-19 are much greater than the past crisis such as SARs in 2003 and financial crisis in 2008 since current world is more integrated and COVID-19 will generate a high level of spill over effects (Fernandes, 2020). Referring to the social relation and health, Singh and Singh(2020) mentions that the travel alerts as well as the isolation and social distancing policy announced by countries increase people’s fear, anxiety and mental disorders.
