Factors
- Water
- Blood pressure
- Homeostasis
- Bone
- Filtering waste
- Blood
Acute renal failure
- Over a few hours / days
- Kidney loses ability to eliminate excess salts / fluid and waste products
from the blood
○ Accumulation of excess electrolytes and waste materials to
dangerous levels that can be life threatening
- Prerenal
○ Sudden and severe drop in BP or interruption of blood flow to
the kidneys
- Intrarenal
○ Damage of glomerulus / interstitial
○ Direct damage to the kidneys by inflammation, infection, toxins,
drugs or autoimmune disease
○ Acute glomerulonephritis
§ Damage of glomerulus due to inflammation
○ Acute interstitial nephritis
§ An inflammation of renal interstitium caused by a variety
of drugs
○ Acute tubular necrosis
§ Caused by nephrotoxic agents
- Postrenal
○ Blocking urine flow
○ Sudden obstruction of urine flow due to enlarged prostate,
kidney stones, bladder tumour
Chronic kidney disease
- Gradual loss of kidney function over a period of months or years
- Causes
○ Type 1 or type 2 diabetes
○ Hypertension
