UNIT – I DIGITAL CONCEPTS
PART-A
1. What are the basic operations of Computer?
Basically computer does 5 basic operations that are input, output,
process, storing and controlling.
2. List out any 5 characteristics of Computer?
Speed
Accuracy
Consistency
Data Storage Capacity
Flexibility
3. What is an Information Technology?
Information Technology (IT) is a business sector that deals with
computing, including hardware, software, telecommunications and
generally anything involved in the transmittal of information or the
systems that facilitate communication.
4. Expand ENIAC, EDVAC, and EDSAC?
ENIAC - Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator.
EDVAC – Electronic discrete variable automatic computer.
EDSAC – Electronic delay storage automatic calculator.
5. Who is the Father of Computer?
Charles Babbage is the Father of Computer
6. What are the Major Components of I and II generation
Computers?
Major Components of I generation Computers – Vacuum Tubes
Major Components of II generation Computers – Transistors
, 7. Define CPU and ALU?
CPU is the unit in a computer that handles all the functionalities of
the computer. It consists of two major components: Arithmetic and Logic
Unit (ALU) and the Control Unit(CU). The Arithmetic Unit performs the
calculations and logical operations. The CU regulates and synchronizes the
tasks of the computer.
ALU stands for Arithmetic and Logical Unit and is a subsystem of the
CPU. The main objective of ALU is to perform arithmetic and logical
operations. Addition, subtraction, division are some examples of
arithmetic operations. Logical operations are used to find the logic of the
statements such as true or false.
8. Expand SMPS, RAM, ROM, BIOS.
SMPS : Switched Mode Power Supply
RAM : Random Access Memory
ROM : Read-only memory
BIOS : Basic Input/Output System
9. Define Bit, Byte, and Nibble?
A bit is the smallest elementary unit of memory which can store one
binary signal either 0 or 1.
A group of 8 bits is called a byte.
A group of 4 bits is called a nibble.
11. Define Logic Gate?
A logic gate is a device that acts as a building block for digital
circuits. They perform basic logical functions that are fundamental to
digital circuits.
12. What are the types of Logic Gates?
The basic logic gates are classified into seven types: AND gate, OR
gate, XOR gate, NAND gate, NOR gate, XNOR gate, and NOT gate.
