Simulation #1 Robert Mendel Cohort B
Patient Name: Kyle Miller
Kyle Miller is a 41 year old Caucasian male who presented with right arm cellulitis s/p puncture
wound
Please answer the following questions prior to simulation day:
1. What is cellulitis? Name 3 potential poor outcomes for a patient with cellulitis?
Cellulitis is an infection of the skin, it is commonly found on the legs but can develop
anywhere. It can be painful, hot to the touch and cause red swelling on the body. Cellulitis is
caused by one of two types of bacteria: Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. Both are treated with
antibiotics, and the treatment is typically very successful. Three potential poor outcomes for
patients with cellulitis: severe tissue damage, amputation, death. (Holland, 2020)
2. Using your Nursing Diagnosis Handbook list at least 2 nursing diagnoses for a patient
with cellulitis. Include three nursing interventions and patient education.
Nursing Diagnosis:
- Acute pain r/t inflammatory changes in tissue from infection.
- Ineffective peripheral tissue perfusion r/t edema of extremities.
Nursing interventions:
“For early arterial insufficiency, encourage exercise such as walking or riding an exercise
bicycle from 30 to 60 minutes per day as ordered by the healthcare provider” (Ackley, Ladwig, &
Beth, 2020).
“If the client smokes, aggressively counsel the client to stop smoking and refer to the
health care provider for medications to support nicotine withdrawal and a smoking withdrawal
program. Smoking cessation substantially reduces risk for PAD in women, but an increased
occurrence of PAD persists even among former smokers who maintain abstinence” (Ackley,
Ladwig, & Beth, 2020).
“Check capillary refill, nail beds usually return to a pinkish color within 1 to 2 seconds
after compression; a capillary refilling time greater than 3 seconds is abnormal” (Ackley, Ladwig,
& Beth, 2020).
